‘And all cosmic truths become known to everyone on those planets because beings who by their conscious efforts learn some truth or other share it with others and in this way little by little all cosmic truths become known to all the beings of that planet whatever may be their aspirations and degree of self-perfecting’
Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson by George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff was published in 1949, the result of several years’ work. Many are of the view that this is one of the greatest books in our history. A book that professes to be deeply transformative, there are numerous third-party opinions on its aim and purpose. Gurdjieff began work on the book after an almost fatal car accident. A popular view is that he wanted to leave profound knowledge which until that time he had tended to transmit personally.
During the return journey to their home planet Karatas, Beelzebub, who was banished to our solar system named Ors, many centuries before, recounts his experiences on planet earth, to his grandson Hassein.
In 48 Chapters it is not always an easy read. Gurdjieff uses many neologisms, Triamazikamno, Heptaparaparshinokh, being Partkdolg duty, Hanbledzoin, and Legominism, are examples. He also requests that we read the book three times. I was lucky in autumn 2009 while living in the Crimea Mountains to have time to read ‘the Tales’ as requested.
‘Firstly – at least as you have already become mechanized to read all your contemporary books and newspapers.
Secondly – as if you were reading aloud to another person
Thirdly – try and fathom the gist of my writings’
He completes the brief introduction entitled ‘Friendly Advice’ by saying:
‘Only then will you be able to count upon forming your own impartial judgement, proper to yourself alone, on my writings. And only then can my hope be actualized that according to your understanding you will obtain the specific benefit for yourself which I anticipate, and wish for you with all my being.
During ‘the Tales’ few if any stones are left unturned. One of the most uplifting sections of the book is where Beelzebub describes in some detail the most successful period on planet earth since the days of Atlantis.
This week I have tried to summarize these chapters here
From Pispascana with love
The word Pispascana is unique. It appears in Chapter 25 of George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff’s Magnum Opus, ‘Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson. The word is mentioned only once. It was the birthplace of ‘The Very Saintly Ashiata Shiemash’ and where he grew up in a poor family.
Of all the characters that appear in Beelzebub’s Tales, Ashiata Shiemash may be the most inspirational. Allegedly he was sent from above in an attempt to help humanity 700 years before Babylon reached its peak.
After several lengthy fasts, around the age of 20, he concluded that mankind had already lost the natural impulses of divine faith, hope and love, and that salvation could only be achieved by means of the conscience. He called this ‘The Terror of the Situation”
The reason for mankind’s degeneration is explained earlier in the book and is attributed to a comet colliding with planet earth before planet earth was fully formed. As above so below. That planetary macro crisis affects us all to this day on the micro or individual level as during adolescence we fail to achieve balance of our intellect, emotions and instincts. This balance is cited in Beelzebub’s Tales as being a normal feature of life on practically every inhabited planet in the Universe, but as planet earth was the victim of a tragic cosmic accident this phenomenon does not occur here naturally.
Having completed his fasts and reached his conclusions ‘The Very Saintly Ashiata Shiemash’ reached out to a small existing brotherhood of wise men named Tchaftantouri which translated meant ‘To be or not to be at all’. The leaders of that organisation had already recognised that there was something that didn’t function correctly in mankind and had gone some way to correcting this within themselves. Guided by ‘The Very Saintly Ashiata Shiemash’, they began to create awareness among the local population that everybody had the potential to fully express Divine impulse conscience but that it did not function well, or at all, due in large part, to a mindless preoccupation with material advantage.
The brotherhood changed its name to ‘Heechtvori’ which translated means, ‘only he will be called and will become the Son of God who acquires in himself conscience’. A hierarchy developed whereby the senior initiates demonstrated the required intensity of ableness to convince and persuade not less than 100 others that the impulse of Divine objective conscience exists in man and how it must be manifested in order that a man may respond to the real sense and aim of his existence.
The doctrine gained momentum and a society began to evolve in which people could quite easily sense those individuals who by their conscious effort were worthy of respect. Personal acquired merit became the gold standard as class and caste vanished.
It wasn’t long before all except the most remote areas of the planet were enjoying the fruit of everybody’s individual effort. Numerous ‘power-possessors’ began surrendering their unmerited rights that they began to recognise themselves were not held for the benefit of others but purely for their own ego-gratification. There was still a hierarchy but based entirely on objective merit.
Perhaps the most significant effect of these events was its impact on the cosmic law that is called ‘the law of equilibration of vibrations’. This relates to mutual nourishment, that is the obligation of our planet as a whole to make its required contribution to the cosmic system. In order to perform this action, our earth relies greatly on the intensity of vibrations of those life forms that exist on the surface of the planet. As a result of the effort of ‘The Very Saintly Ashiata Shiemash’ in general human vibration intensified resulting in diminished birth and death rates. This is because the greatest release of vibrations occurs at the moment of death of the physical body. During that time planet earth required fewer deaths to obtain the degree of vibration necessary to fulfil its cosmic obligation as more intensity of vibrations was resulting during the course of normal everyday human life.
The moment I read this it seemed entirely plausible. We can relate this to modern history and see easily what happens. There were many deaths as a result of World War One and the Russian Revolution. It doesn’t require too much investigation to deduce that a large number of those who died possessed a greater intensity of vibration than most of us currently inhabiting planet earth. What happened next? Due to the general conditions of life, lower intensity of vibration was occurring automatically in humans so, a larger number were born to replace those lost during World War One and the Russian Revolution. Then the same thing happens after the Ukrainian Terror Famine and World War Two. We have another increase in population and another decline or reduction in the intensity of vibration in humans especially as mass media gathers pace to more rapidly and further undermine human’s substance. This accelerated again after the genocide that resulted from the Communist takeover of China and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. This process is easy to see on our planet right now. Can we the people reverse this process?
There are those who currently speculate that the worldwide implementation of the so-called Covid vaccine is part of an agenda to reduce the population of planet earth. While it may indeed be beneficial for the planet to sustain a smaller number of people or maybe better put it would be beneficial for those fewer people who are left inhabiting the planet, this would only be the case if their intensity of vibration is much higher than it is currently. A substantial decrease in the population of planet earth could not currently be sustained if this cosmic law exists. Also, if this law exists any cull resulting from current events will simply result in even more births to replace those culled.
You would have thought that by now the power possessors, as Beelzebub called them, would have been aware of this cosmic law and tried to act accordingly. They are obviously not powerful enough to positively influence this law which events during the last century seem to confirm. It doesn’t look good; egos are destroying our existence and it seems there is little that can be done collectively to stop this. Small groups have traditionally been a method to work against these negative forces but formed without care, they can do as much harm as good.
The solution is simple. Do what you can. Divine impulse conscience is still within us. In the words of the great Sufi Hatem El Assam
‘Accept the ignorance of others and spare them from yours. Give to them from your substance and don’t expect any of theirs’
Blessings and best wishes to you all
